Does Shipt Take EBT?

Yes — Shipt accepts SNAP EBT payment for grocery deliveries from a growing number of partner retailers, including Target, Meijer, Dierbergs, and Hy-Vee in select states. Shipt began accepting SNAP EBT in mid-2024 as part of a broader industry push to expand online grocery access for SNAP households, and the company has continued to grow its EBT-eligible retailer network since then.

This guide covers exactly how Shipt EBT delivery works and how Shipt SNAP benefits function, which stores participate, the discounted Shipt membership available to SNAP users, and how fees are handled separately from your EBT balance.

Which Retailers Accept EBT Through Shipt

As of [year], Shipt accepts SNAP EBT payment for orders from:

  • Target
  • Meijer
  • Dierbergs Markets
  • Hy-Vee

Shipt has indicated it plans to continue adding retailers over time, so this list may expand. Availability also varies by state and specific location — check within the Shipt app to confirm which participating retailers currently deliver to your address with EBT support enabled.

Do You Need a Shipt Membership to Use EBT?

No. This is an important point many people assume incorrectly: a paid Shipt membership is not required to shop with your SNAP EBT card on the platform. You only need a free Shipt account to place an order.

However, without a membership, orders under $35 incur a $7 delivery fee, and other per-order fees may apply. A paid membership eliminates delivery fees on orders of $35 or more.

The Discounted Shipt Membership for SNAP Recipients

Shipt offers SNAP EBT cardholders a membership at $4.99/month — more than 50% off the standard monthly rate. This discounted offer does not expire and includes full access to Shipt’s membership benefits:

  • $0 delivery fee on orders of $35 or more
  • Access to Shipt’s Preferred Shopper feature, letting you request the same shopper for repeat orders
  • Member-only deals and discounts on groceries

New Shipt users can also try a membership free for a trial period before committing. The membership fee itself, like on every delivery platform, cannot be paid with your EBT card — you need a separate payment method for the subscription itself.

How to Add Your EBT Card to Shipt

  1. Open the Shipt app
  2. Go to Account
  3. Select Payments
  4. Tap Add Card
  5. Choose EBT and enter your card number

Note: Shipt only allows one EBT card registered to your account at a time. If you need to switch to a different card, you must delete the original card before adding a new one.

How Checkout Works With EBT on Shipt

  1. Shop for groceries through the app — SNAP-eligible items are tagged and searchable specifically, making it easy to identify what qualifies
  2. Add both SNAP-eligible and (if needed) non-eligible items to your cart
  3. At checkout, Shipt automatically applies your EBT card to the eligible portion of your order
  4. You can adjust this amount manually: tap Change next to your payment method, toggle Split payments on, and enter the specific dollar amount you want charged to your EBT card
  5. You can check your current SNAP EBT balance directly in the app by tapping Check SNAP EBT balance and entering your PIN
  6. Add a secondary payment method for delivery fees, service fees, tips, and any non-eligible items
  7. Your EBT card is charged as soon as your order is created — not when it is delivered

One notable exception: in states with a bottle deposit fee, that specific fee can also be paid with SNAP benefits alongside your eligible groceries — this is one of the very few fee types EBT can cover, since it is tied directly to the returnable container system rather than being a service charge.

What Shipt Fees Are Not Covered by EBT

As with every delivery platform, your EBT card only pays for SNAP-eligible items (plus bottle deposit fees, where applicable). Everything else requires your secondary payment method:

  • Delivery fees (waived with a $35+ membership order, otherwise $7 or more)
  • Service fees
  • Tips
  • Any non-SNAP-eligible items in your cart
  • Additional items added after your order was placed, if they exceed your original EBT charge amount
  • Weight differences on price-per-pound items that increase your total beyond the original EBT amount

Adding Items After You Place Your Order

Shipt allows you to add items to your order up to one hour before your delivery or pickup window begins. If you add more SNAP-eligible items, you can increase the amount charged to your EBT card by returning to the payment details section, selecting Update Amount, entering the additional amount, and confirming with your PIN. If you do not increase your EBT amount, any added SNAP-eligible items beyond your original total are charged to your secondary payment method instead.

Shipt EBT Refunds

If an item paid for with your EBT card is out of stock, canceled, or otherwise not delivered, you receive a refund credited back to your EBT card — you will get an email confirming the refunded amount and your updated SNAP EBT balance. Shipt cannot issue refunds for EBT-purchased items as cash, credit card refunds, or Shipt account credit — this follows the same federal anti-fraud rule that applies at every SNAP-authorized retailer.

What You Can Buy With EBT on Shipt

Do I need a Shipt membership to use my EBT card?

No. You can use your SNAP EBT card on Shipt without any paid membership — you just need a free account. However, orders under $35 without a membership incur a $7 delivery fee, and a discounted $4.99/month membership eliminates that fee.

How much is Shipt membership for SNAP recipients?

Can I use EBT for Shipt delivery fees?

No, with one narrow exception: state-mandated bottle deposit fees can be paid with SNAP benefits. All other fees — delivery, service, and tips — require a separate payment method.

What happens if a Shipt item paid with EBT is out of stock?

You receive a refund credited back to your EBT card, along with an email confirming the refunded amount and your updated balance. Shipt cannot refund EBT purchases as cash, credit card refunds, or account credit.

Summary

Shipt accepts SNAP EBT for grocery orders from Target, Meijer, Dierbergs, and Hy-Vee, with no membership required to use your card — though the discounted $4.99/month membership eliminates delivery fees on qualifying orders. Your EBT card covers only SNAP-eligible items (plus bottle deposits in applicable states); delivery fees, service fees, and tips always require a separate payment method.
