Can You Use EBT on Amazon?

Yes — you can use EBT on Amazon. Amazon accepts SNAP EBT benefits for eligible grocery purchases through Amazon Fresh and Amazon.com. The program is available in all 50 states and Washington D.C., making Amazon one of the largest online grocery options for SNAP recipients.

This guide covers exactly how to set up EBT on Amazon, what you can and cannot buy, how Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods delivery works with EBT, and tips to get the most out of Amazon SNAP benefits.

How to Add Your EBT Card to Amazon

Setting up your EBT card on Amazon takes about five minutes and only needs to be done once.

Step 1: Go to Amazon.com and sign in to your account. If you do not have an Amazon account, create one for free — no Prime membership required to use EBT.

Step 2: Go to Account & ListsYour AccountManage payment methodsAdd a payment methodAdd an EBT card.

Step 3: Enter your 16-digit EBT card number and your state. Amazon does not require your PIN at this stage — your PIN is entered at checkout each time you place an order.

Step 4: Your EBT card is saved to your account. When you check out, select your EBT card as the payment method for eligible grocery items.

Alternative path: Go to amazon.com/snap and Amazon will walk you through the EBT setup process with prompts.

What You Can Buy With EBT on Amazon

Amazon EBT purchases follow the same federal SNAP rules that apply in grocery stores — eligible food items can be purchased, non-eligible items cannot.

EBT eligible on Amazon:

  • Fresh produce (available through Amazon Fresh)
  • Meat, poultry, and seafood
  • Dairy products
  • Bread, cereals, and grains
  • Canned and packaged goods
  • Frozen foods
  • Snacks and beverages
  • Baby food and infant formula

Not EBT eligible on Amazon:

  • Alcohol
  • Hot prepared food
  • Vitamins and supplements (Supplement Facts label)
  • Household supplies and cleaning products
  • Pet food
  • Non-food items
  • Amazon Prime membership fee
  • Delivery fees and tips
  • Restaurant meals through Amazon (not SNAP eligible)

When you check out, Amazon automatically separates your order into SNAP-eligible and non-eligible items. Your EBT card is charged only for the eligible portion — you pay for the rest separately with another payment method.

Amazon Fresh and EBT

Amazon Fresh is Amazon’s grocery delivery and pickup service. It is one of the best options for SNAP recipients who want to shop for groceries online.

How Amazon Fresh EBT works:

  • Shop for groceries on Amazon Fresh just like any other Amazon purchase
  • Add eligible grocery items to your cart
  • At checkout, select your EBT card as payment for SNAP-eligible items
  • Enter your EBT PIN to confirm
  • Choose delivery or pickup

Delivery fees and EBT: Amazon Fresh delivery fees cannot be paid with EBT. Delivery fees must be covered with a separate payment method — credit card, debit card, or Amazon gift card. The groceries themselves are covered by EBT; only the delivery service fee requires another payment.

Amazon Fresh grocery pickup: If you prefer to avoid delivery fees, Amazon Fresh offers free grocery pickup at select locations. You order online, pay with EBT, and pick up your groceries at the store without any additional fees.

Amazon Fresh availability: Amazon Fresh is available in most major metro areas. Coverage has expanded significantly in recent years. Check Amazon Fresh availability for your zip code at amazon.com/fresh.

Amazon and Whole Foods Market With EBT

Amazon owns Whole Foods Market. You can use your EBT card at Whole Foods in-store and for Whole Foods delivery through Amazon.

In-store at Whole Foods: Present your physical EBT card at the register and enter your PIN. Whole Foods accepts EBT for all SNAP-eligible food items — including their extensive prepared food section (cold items only) and organic produce.

Whole Foods delivery through Amazon: Order Whole Foods groceries for delivery or pickup through Amazon.com. Select your EBT card at checkout. Same rules apply — eligible food items are covered by EBT, delivery fees require a separate payment.

Amazon Prime for Whole Foods delivery: While a Prime membership is not required to use EBT on Amazon, Prime members get faster Whole Foods delivery options and sometimes lower minimum order thresholds. Amazon offers a discounted Prime membership at $6.99/month for EBT cardholders — this fee cannot be paid with EBT but represents significant savings versus the standard $14.99/month rate.

Amazon Discounts for EBT Cardholders

Beyond grocery shopping, Amazon offers a discounted Prime membership for SNAP, Medicaid, and EBT cardholders:

  • Standard Prime: $14.99/month or $139/year
  • Prime with EBT discount: $6.99/month

To access the discount, go to amazon.com/prime/ebt and verify your EBT card eligibility. The discounted Prime membership gives you access to Prime Video, Prime Music, free shipping on millions of items, and faster Whole Foods delivery — all at more than half the standard price.

This discount cannot be paid with EBT benefits — the monthly membership fee must be paid with a separate payment method.

How Amazon EBT Checkout Works

When you check out with an EBT card on Amazon:

  1. Add SNAP-eligible grocery items to your cart
  2. Proceed to checkout
  3. Select your EBT card as the payment method
  4. Enter your EBT PIN in the secure PIN pad that appears on screen
  5. Review your order — Amazon shows which items are SNAP-eligible and which require a different payment
  6. Confirm your order

If your cart contains both EBT-eligible and non-eligible items, Amazon splits the payment automatically. You will need a secondary payment method on file for the non-eligible portion.

Amazon Subscribe & Save With EBT

Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program — which provides discounts on regularly ordered items — is compatible with EBT for eligible grocery items. Setting up a Subscribe & Save order for pantry staples (canned goods, coffee, baby formula, pasta, etc.) using your EBT card can help reduce costs and ensure consistent delivery of staples.

Limitations of Using EBT on Amazon

Delivery fees are not covered. This is the most common surprise. Your groceries are paid for with EBT, but the delivery fee comes out of another payment. Amazon Fresh delivery fees typically range from $3.99 to $9.99 per order depending on order size and your membership status.

Not all Amazon items are SNAP-eligible. Amazon’s full product catalog includes millions of non-food items. Only SNAP-eligible grocery products can be purchased with your EBT card. The checkout process handles this automatically.

PIN required every order. Unlike a credit card saved to Amazon, your EBT card requires PIN entry at every checkout. Amazon does not store EBT PINs.

No EBT on Amazon Marketplace sellers. Third-party sellers on Amazon Marketplace are not SNAP-authorized. Only Amazon itself (including Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods on Amazon) accepts EBT.
